Should I Get Lasik?

Lasik

Before you can have Lasik eyes surgery done you will need to see an eye doctor to be considered as a candidate for the surgery.

1. Eye Exam

You should expect to have a full eye exam performed. This is the time you will need to tell your doctor if you are wearing contact lenses, as the lenses can change the shape of your eye for up to 4 weeks. It is a good idea to stop wearing any contact and switch over to glasses 4 weeks prior to your initial eye appointment. This way your doctor can examine the natural shape of your eye instead of the eye shaped from your contact lens use.

2. Pre-Surgery

During your eye exam your doctor should discuss your procedure with you, and your responsibilities after surgery. This is a good time to discuss medications you are currently on, and present medical history. This is also a good time to ask your eye doctor all the questions you have about your procedure. Give yourself enough time, or even ask to sleep on your decision before making any agreements that do not feel suitable to you. At no time should you feel pressured into making a decision you are not fully comfortable making.

Consider all the pros and cons to the decision before making your final decision. The day before your surgery it is best to avoid any perfume, makeup, lotions, or creams. These products can cause infection after surgery. Your eye doctor may even ask you to scrub your face and eye lashes before performing surgery. This is normal, and to be expected. You wouldn’t want any infection from your surgery when it should be a time for great relief (once you’re healed that is).

3. Getting Home After the Surgery

Another thing to consider is how you are getting home. You will need to arrange transportation before and after the surgery especially if you are taking medication to help you relax before your procedure. You may also want to arrange a ride to your follow up appointment just to be extra cautious. You should expect to not be able to see after your procedure the day of surgery.

4. What to expect post surgery

After your surgery your eyes may itch and burn and could possibly feel like there is something inside them. It is also a common thing to experience mild pain afterwards. You doctor may prescribe pain relievers to take if your pain is too sharp. Your eyes may tear up and water a lot, and upon opening your eyes you may have blurred vision leading you to want to rub your eyes. Do not rub your eyes, even lightly rubbing your eyes could dislodge the flap on your eye.

5. Recovery

You should plan to take a few days off from work to properly recover and should expect to take up to 3 days to recover. You should also expect to see your doctor 24 to 48 hours after surgery and at regular visits after for at least the first half year following your surgery.

6. Follow Up With Your Doctor

And lastly and most importantly you should expect to see clearer and clearer each passing day (moderate fluctuation is normal and should continue to get better each day). One of our best centers is the Lasik Eye Surgery Center in Atlanta, GA.
